One of the most unique and fun ways to experience the Jordan River is from the water itself. The Jordan River provides an unparalleled opportunity for recreational water activities, offering a distinct and intimate perspective of the surrounding natural environment, urban landscapes, and local wildlife. Paddling the river—whether by canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard—allows explorers to truly immerse themselves in the heart of the Jordan River Parkway. It’s an adventure that reveals the river’s calm flow, its hidden bends, and the vibrant ecosystem it supports. This on-the-water experience is ideal for families, nature enthusiasts, and those seeking a peaceful escape, transforming a simple outing into a memorable journey along Utah’s vital north-south waterway.

Boating has inherent risks, and it is the responsibility of the boater to ensure their own safety when paddling the Jordan River.  Rivers are constantly changing, so it’s important to check conditions and make a plan every time you go out.  Every year people get injured and even perish on the river.  Be prepared to minimize your risks and maximize your fun!

  • YOU are responsible for ensuring your own safety.
Boaters must know their own skills and capabilities and assess river hazards or conditions accordingly—not all conditions will be safe for all levels of skill or capability.
  • Life Jackets are Required by law.
Boaters must always wear appropriate personal flotation devices (PFDs) and have any other safety equipment necessary for safe paddling.
  • Conditions on the river can change without warning.
Periods of high water flow, such as during spring snow melt or after storm events can create new or different hazards.
  • Boaters should scout out their route
This is best done immediately before entering the water to evaluate current conditions. Boaters must know when and how to exit the river safely to avoid hazards.  Boaters should not attempt to paddle the river during periods of swift, high flows.
  • Keep dogs out of the river:
For the health and safety of your dog and others, it is best to keep them out of the river and in the boat or at home

Plan Your Paddle – Know Before You Go!

  • Check Water Gauges and Temps
    • Water flow can fluctuate from moment to moment, so check the water gauges to see what the recent average has been
    • During colder months, there is an increased risk of hypothermia. You can add water temperature and air temperature together and if the total is below 100, make sure to wear a dry suit with layers or cancel.
  • Watch past paddle videos to familiarize yourself with the section
  • Scout the river just before your paddle
  • Go with someone who is familiar with the section
