The Jordan River Parkway has designated equestrian trails, providing a unique opportunity for horseback riding right in the heart of our valley. These trails allow riders to experience the beauty of the river corridor from a different perspective, offering a peaceful and engaging outdoor activity for horse enthusiasts. Riders should be aware of specific trail sections where horseback riding is permitted and adhere to all safety and etiquette guidelines for a harmonious experience with other trail users.

Communicate: Announce your presence when approaching others from behind, and make eye contact with oncoming trail users to ensure mutual awareness.

Control Your Horse: Maintain control of your horse at all times. Ensure your horse is accustomed to encountering other trail users, dogs, and unexpected noises.

Stay on Designated Trails: Only ride on trails explicitly designated for equestrian use. Do not venture onto sensitive natural areas or non-equestrian paths.  Review trail map before you head out.

Pack It In, Pack It Out: Do not litter. Dispose of all trash in designated receptacles or take it with you.

Clean Up After Your Horse: If your horse defecates in a high-traffic area, please dismount and move the waste off the trail.

Maintain a Safe Distance: Keep a safe distance from other horses and trail users to prevent startling or injuries.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Pay attention to your horse’s behavior, other trail users, and potential hazards on the path.

Use Caution at Crossings: Slow down and be extra vigilant when crossing roads or driveways.

Carry Water and Supplies: Ensure you have enough water for yourself and your horse, and any other necessary supplies for your ride.

What section of the trail can I ride on?

There are three main areas where you can ride horses on the Jordan River Parkway.  Some areas have separate soft paths, while others run parallel to the main path.  Review the Trail Map for more information before you head out.

  • 4800 S to 5800 S.
  • 9800 S. to 14600 S.
  • Perry Farms to Jordan Narrows

When crossing paths with a horse, who should yield?

Equestrian trail users have the right of way, and hikers and bikers should yield to horses. This rule is based on the horse’s size, its instinct to spook, and the need for rider safety, which makes equestrians the most vulnerable user on a multi-use trail.

Which trailheads can I park a horse trailer?

  • Jordan Narrows
  • Arrow
  • Shields Lane Trailhead
  • Germania Parking lot at 5400 S.
