To keep the trail safe for pedestrians and other uses, most motorized vehicles and mobility devices are not allowed on the Jordan River Trail — including motorcycles, e-bikes, motorized scooters, motorized boards and one-wheelers, motorized all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), and similar devices — whether electric or gas-powered.  Motorized sport enthusiasts are in luck!  There is actually a place you can go right along the Jordan River that is dedicated just to this.  Just northwest of the Rose Park neighborhood in Salt Lake City, is the Jordan River OHV State Recreation Area.  With four tracks, including two motocross (MX) tracks for off-highway motorcyclists, and two dual-purpose OHM and ATV tracks, there’s no need to drive hours away to get your fix.  They also offer educational courses and the occasional spectator event.

If you see these types of vehicles on the trail, please report to the local law enforcement agency. There are a few exceptions allowed under state law, such as assistive mobility devices, like an electric wheelchair, or a Class 1 e-bike, which is pedal assisted only (i.e. – you must pedal to operate, with no throttle and a maximum speed of 20 mph). You may also see trail maintenance crews out on the trail in vehicles, so stay alert and move out of the way when being approached.

Keep all motorized vehicles off of the Jordan River Parkway It is dangerous and illegal.  If you see someone on the trail, take a photo and contact local law enforcement to report. Do not attempt to confront.

Stay Aware of Your Surroundings The increasing number of illegal motorized vehicles on the trail is unfortunately causing collisions and other safety issues. Always remain alert, particularly when approaching blind curves, narrow passages, and intersections.

What counts as a motorized vehicle?  Does this include my ebike?

For the purpose of the Jordan River Parkway Trail, a motorized vehicle includes any vehicle or device primarily powered by an engine or motor, whether gas or electric, that is not an assistive mobility device. This includes:

  • Gas-powered motorcycles, scooters, and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs).
  • Motorized dirt bikes.
  • Most electric-powered devices like non-pedal-assist electric scooters, motorized skateboards, and one-wheelers.

E-bikes (Electric Bicycles):

The only type of e-bike permitted on the Jordan River Parkway Trail is a Class 1 e-bike.

  • Allowed: Class 1 e-bikes are allowed because they are pedal-assisted only (meaning the motor only operates when you are pedaling) and have a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph. They are considered non-motorized under the Parkway’s rules.
  • Prohibited: Class 2 (throttle-actuated) and Class 3 (pedal-assisted up to 28 mph) e-bikes are prohibited as they are considered motorized and pose a safety risk to other trail users.

What about Golf Carts?

Personal golf carts are prohibited along the Jordan River Trail.  There are a few locations along the trail that are shared with golf courses.  This happens at Rose Park, Glendale, and River Oaks Golf Courses.  Some cities use golf carts or other recreational vehicles for trail maintenance, so keep alert when out on the trail.
