Who says you have to drive up to the mountains to get a scenic walk or trail run?  The Jordan River Parkway provides 46 miles of beautiful paved trail within minutes of most homes, schools and offices in the Salt Lake Valley.  It’s the perfect place to take the kids and dog on an afternoon stroll, or to get in a training run after work, the Jordan River Parkway has easy access to a flat, paved trail.  Nowhere in the valley beats the Jordan River at the magic hour.  If you know, you know.

Follow these tips to be safe on the trail and practice good stewardship.

  • Stay Right, Pass Left: Keep to the right side of the trail and always pass on the left. Announce your presence when passing (e.g., “On your left!” or “Passing on your left!”).
  • Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Avoid using headphones that block out ambient sounds, and be alert for other trail users, obstacles, and potential hazards.
  • Respect Wildlife: Maintain a safe distance from any wildlife encountered on the trail. Do not feed animals.
  • Pack It In, Pack It Out: Do not litter. Dispose of all trash in designated receptacles or take it with you.
  • Stay on the Trail: Do not venture off the marked path to protect sensitive natural areas.
  • Use Lights at Night: If walking or running during dawn, dusk, or at night, wear reflective clothing and carry a light source for visibility.
  • Communicate: Make eye contact with other trail users when approaching or passing to ensure mutual awareness.
  • Carry Water and Supplies: Ensure you have enough water and any other necessary supplies for your walk or run, especially on longer excursions.
  • Go with a buddy, or let someone know your plan: Sharing your route and expected return time helps ensure your safety in case of an emergency.

How long is the Jordan River Parkway trail?

The main trail is 46 miles long. Some sections have secondary trails, and the network of interconnected trails is ever-expanding.  We have a goal to put trail on both sides of the river wherever it is suitable.

Where does the Jordan River Parkway trail start and end?

The south end of the trail starts at Inlet Park in Saratoga Springs.  The north end of the trail ends at Porters Landing Boat Take Out.  Longer excursions can be created by continuing on connected trails such as the Legacy Parkway to the North, the Parleys Trail to the East, or the Murdock Canal Trail to the South.

Are there any fees to use the Jordan River Parkway?

There are no fees to use the Jordan River Trail, Water Trail, and adjacent parks. However, events along the Parkway may require permits, and parks often require fees to be paid to reserve pavilions. Refer to our Event & Permitting Guide for more information about planning events.

Are there restrooms or water fountains along the trail?

Restrooms or water fountains can be found at most parks along the trail. However, many restrooms close during colder months from October to April to avoid issues with freezing pipes. Check with local jurisdictions for details.

Are dogs allowed on the Jordan River Parkway?

Dogs are allowed, but must be leashed. Unleashed dogs may result in citations.

Is the trail flat or hilly?

For the most part, the trail maintains a pretty level grade, except for one section in Bluffdale and Lehi where the trail goes through the Jordan Narrows.

Where can I get information about races?

Check out our events calendar to see if there are any community races happening.

Do you host community walks?

Yes we do!  We have a weekly Walk and Talk during our Get to the River Festival in September.
